Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and passionate high school building construction teacher to join our team. The ideal candidate will have expertise in the construction trades training and instruction to prepare students for future careers in trade-based construction industry and STEM careers. The instructor will be pedagogically creative, flexible and able to demonstrate how the fundamentals and principles of the building sciences connect to aspects of construction-based trades and other science-based careers. A collaborative and adaptable spirit is essential to success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work-Based Learning Integration

  • Lab & Field Instruction: Teach foundational and intermediate skills in carpentry, construction safety, financial literacy, and real estate development within the Work-Based Learning Lab.

Instruction and Planning:

  • Lesson Planning/Structure: The lessons contain a do now, guided practice, and exit ticket that is at an application level of rigor. Teacher adjusts instruction to ensure student engagement, learning, and work completion.

  • Student Engagement: Use of developmentally-appropriate instructional strategies, resources, and technology to support access to the curriculum

  • Assessment and Response to Assessment Results: Check for understanding formally and informally to evaluate and respond to student learning. Demonstrate an ability to respond effectively to assessment results by developing appropriate accommodations and remediation, scaffolds, and support students with various learning needs (i.e. IEP, ELL etc) based on the data.

Classroom Management:

  • Classroom Procedures: Establish clear classroom routines, procedures, and norms, including a clear What To Do, Daily Learning Objectives, Agenda and Exit Ticket.

  • Classroom Expectations: Establish and maintain clear and explicit directions for learning and behavior.

  • Active Monitoring: Survey the academic engagement of the classroom.

  • Least Invasive: Ability to perceive when a student, class, or group is unfocused or unruly; refocus them using least invasive procedures first; and do it again effectively.

  • On-Task Behavior: Extent to which students are engaged in content and completing tasks. Teacher holds out for 100% response participation.

Requirements:

  • Slow House Projects: Lead cohorts of students in renovating properties as part of their construction training. Coordinate with community partners and internal team members to ensure projects meet learning outcomes.

  • Career Credentialing: Prepare students to earn industry-recognized credentials and align instruction with BuildUp's YouthBuild program objectives and credentialing standards.

  • YouthBuild Collaboration: Partner with YouthBuild staff to support students’ transition into Build UP’s high school and postsecondary pathways. Align instructional plans with broader program outcomes.

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred. Ability to serve as an Adjunct Community College instructor a major plus.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build strong relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and external partners.

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

  • A passion for teaching and the ability to inspire and motivate students to reach their full potential.

  • Willingness to adapt to changing demands and priorities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Ability to teach, support and communicate with students and families living in an urban environment
